A 7.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred Friday in the centre of the Pacific Ocean, 211 kilometres northeast of Tonga, prompted a tsunami warning from U.S. authorities for several Pacific Ocean countries.
According to the report of the Earthquake Emergency Program of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), for its abbreviation in English, the earthquake was registered at 11:48 a.m. (Spanish peninsular time), with a hypocenter that was approximately 25 kilometres deep.
The American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Niue, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tuvalu, and Wallis and Futuna are all at risk due to the earthquake's high waves, according to the US Tsunami Warning Center, which announced this information shortly after the earthquake.
The centre has advised residents to stay away from the coast and harbours because all of these territories may face increasing coastal seas during the next few hours.
So far, there have been no reports of deaths or injuries.
